The three-coordinate measuring machine is one of the methods for measuring and obtaining dimensional data, as it can replace a variety of surface measuring tools and expensive combination gauges, and reduce the time required for complex measurement tasks from hours to minutes.

The function of a three-coordinate measuring machine is to evaluate dimensional data quickly and accurately, providing operators with useful information about the production process status, which is quite different from all manual measuring devices. When the object to be measured is placed in a three-coordinate measurement space, the coordinate positions of each measurement point on the object can be obtained. Based on the spatial coordinate values of these points, the geometric dimensions, shape and position of the object to be measured can be calculated.

By placing the object to be measured in the measurement space of the three-coordinate measuring machine, the values of the points on the surface of the part to be measured at three coordinate positions in space are precisely measured by the contact or non-contact detection system. Then, the spatial coordinate values of these points are fitted to form measurement elements such as circles, spheres, cylinders, cones, and surfaces, and mathematical operations are performed by the software. Calculate the geometric dimensions, shape and position to be measured.

In simple terms, a three-coordinate measuring machine is an instrument equipped with a detector capable of moving in three directions, which can move on three mutually perpendicular rails. This detector transmits signals through contact or non-contact means. The displacement measurement system of the three axes (such as an optical scale) calculates the coordinates (x,y,z) of each point of the workpiece and various functional measurements through a data processor or computer, etc. It can be used in fields such as mechanical manufacturing, automotive industry, electronics industry, aerospace industry, and metrology and testing, and is an important testing device for modern industrial inspection and quality control.
